Alice W. Ingraham

The-Artist-1After more than fifteen years of successfully designing and building large stained glass windows, Alice's interest in oil painting blossomed in 1993 at Montserrat School of Art in Massachusetts. She became a full-time student of David Curtis of Rockport, MA the following year and is still enjoying his instruction, inspiration and friendship. Robert Cormier of The Guild of Boston Artists (Gammel Studios) and Ernie Saniga of Pennsylvania (Southern Lancaster County,) have also provided Alice with significant technical and observational training. During the winter of 2006/2007, Alice joined ceramic classes at the Round Top Center for the Arts, becoming passionate about the feel and possibilities of working with clay.

Though primarily an "en plein air" oil painter, Alice is also familiar with pastels and enjoys doing life drawing, still life, wild life, and atmospheric landscapes in her spacious island studio. Currently, Alice is a year-round resident on Cousin's Island, Yarmouth, ME, having moved south from a 24 month residence on Friendship Long Island (population 4, in winter.) She offers painting instruction for both groups and individuals of all ages. Her emphasis is on combining personal visualization, emotion, inspiration with various representational techniques (understanding value, design, color, etc) to capture the uniqueness of the subject. Artists who have influenced her style included Rembrandt, Corot, Vermeer, Constable, Mary Cassat, Sargent, Ripley, N.C. Wyeth, Samuel Cady, Wolf & Cecily Kahn, and Carolyn Walton.

Alice has exhibited at many group and one-man shows throughout New England and Florida and has won numerous awards. Her originals are exhibited by Pine Capital Corporation of Portland, ME (www.pinecapital.com) and in her island studio by appointment. She is a member of the Rockport Art Association, the North Shore Arts Association (both of MA,) The Barrier Island Group of the Arts, The Sanibel-Captiva Art League, The Union of Maine Visual Artists, The Chocolate Church Arts Center, Center for Maine Contemporary Art, Pastel painters of Maine, The Mary Bryan Memorial Gallery (Jeffersonville, VT,) and Yarmouth Arts.

"When I paint or create ceramic pieces, time doesn't exist. Vision is my essence. If I can express the soul (dignity, serenity, melody, honesty) of what I see, then I am living fully. I hope to provide others with that same enchantment and joy, whether they are students, friends or strangers. I believe life, painting and sculpting are about recognizing and cherishing our world's natural symphonies."
